Day 2 Siem Reap – Banteay Srei – Ta Prohm – Angkor Thom
This morning will be an early rise to take a “Tuk Tuk” ride to Ta Prohm. This magnificent, jungle covered temple is a sight to behold at sunrise. After exploring this fascinating temple, (the location for the Lara Croft Tomb Raider movie), we will return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast we head for the ancient capital city of Angkor Thom entering through its west gate. From the enigmatic faces of the Bayon Temple to the intricate base reliefs of the Terrace of the Elephants, Angkor Thom is filled with amazing monuments. After lunch we will drive to Banteay Srei, the only major temple at Angkor that was not built for a king. Constructed in 967 AD by one of king Rajendravarman’s counsellors, Yajnyavahara, it showcases the most exquisite, deep and complex carvings in all Khmer architecture. Next we visit Preah Khan meaning “The Sacred Sword”. It is one of the largest temple compounds in Angkor and is defined by its four concentric walls. The main shrine and its adjoining buildings are richly decorated with Buddhist motifs and scenes from Hindu epics. We will return to Siem Reap in the late afternoon so you can enjoy your free time shopping and relaxing.

Day 3 Siem Reap – Khmer Village – Beng Mealea – Siem Reap
Today we head out to a Khmer Village. This scenic drive, through local countryside, provides a plethora of photographic opportunities. This is a rare chance for you to see what real life is like in a Cambodian village. For a few hours you may choose to help plant the rice, make a roof or harvest bananas– life revolves around the seasons, so activities will vary depending on the time of year you visit. A lunch box will be provided by one of the villagers. Following lunch, we drive further to Beng Mealea Temple and explore this abandoned temple (11th century), strangled by the jungle. If it looks like you have stumbled into an Indiana Jones movie it’s because Beng Mealea is the actual temple in Raiders of the Lost Ark! After a day full of walking, you will receive a voucher for a 60 minute complimentary foot massage for some relaxation before the drive back to Siem Reap. This evening is free. You may choose to explore Pub Street and the Night Market

Day 4 Siem Reap – Floating Village – Fly to Phnom Penh
After breakfast we will have a break from temples and take a traditional wooden boat on Tonle Sap Lake. This is the largest permanent freshwater lake in South Asia and flows into the Tonle Sap River, which joins the Mekong River at Phnom Penh. We will see a “floating village” made up of boats converted to look like houses. The “village” moves from place to place according to the water levels. We continue to one of the city’s lively, open markets, Psar Chass, called the “Old Market”, where you can see the locals shopping and going about their daily lives. Later in the day you will then be transferred to the airport for your departure to Phnom Penh. Upon arrival you will be greeted by your guide and driver and transferred to your hotel.

Day 5 Phnom Penh – City Tour
Today we embark on our tour of the Capital City, often described as the “Pearl of Asia”. First up we visit the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. The Royal Palace complex was built in 1866 during the reign of King Norodom. Set in beautiful gardens this impressive, colourful palace, highlights the Khmer style of architecture. Near the Royal Palace is the Silver Pagoda, also known as The Emerald Buddha Temple. This Pagoda is adorned with Buddha Statues decorated in diamonds, emeralds, gold and silver.
Next we continue to the National Museum, showcasing Cambodian History and the Khmer empire and to Wat Phnom, the birthplace of the capital.
On a more sombre note we visit to Toul sleng S21 Genocide museum. This building was originally a school then transformed into a prison during Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge’s cruel, genocidal regime. We move to Choeng Ek Museum, known as The Killing Fields, where millions of people were executed. Although they are two very sombre places, they are important to Cambodia’s recent, turbulent history. The Khmer Rouge government was legitimised by the United Nations and many influential countries and one would hope the mistakes of the past and its impact on the Cambodian people are never forgotten or repeated. We will finish the day on a brighter note by visiting the Russian Market. The “must see” Russian Market is the most “well known”, foreign market in Cambodia. Visitors will be surprised at the variety of goods available such as silk, jewellery and clothes.
